I'm sure like me you all have alot of sympathy for the likes of HMV. You really have to feel for a business when their customers move to somewhere you just can't compete with...
We all remember the joys of handing over 25 sheets for the latest fabric cd in the days when you might get a album every two months. That was until you grew up abit and realised what kind of job they were doing on you every time you walk in.

Theres a piece by Jim Carroll in the Times today containing several nuggets from various marketing types. The best explanation they can come up with is the VFI defence. Crate diggers will also be disappointed to hear those secret music specialist spots like 'Tesco and Dunnes' are now out the open.

“At the moment it’s hard to get people to leave their house to go anywhere. Look at what’s happening with the pub trade, for instance. A shop needs a hook to get the potential customer in. That customer is looking for an experience and value, and grocery shops and supermarkets do that kind of thing really well already with loyalty cards.”

Whinge , whinge. Not much value to be found in a pub either as it goes. Just more vested interests trying to protect their profit with as little change for the customers benefit as possible. The 'experience' people were looking for if I remember was available elsewhere before the likes of HMV came to town and don't think they did all that great of job of replacing it.
Anyway ye know all this, just passing the afternoon.

On a slightly related note.
Could 2011 be the year we finally see a dent in our licensing laws ? We've long learned not to hold our breath at this stage but with FF on the way out and the general state of the place, surely there is a good chance of things turning around. FG/Lab have made noises in the past while in opposition but will they follow through when they finally find themselves in the back seat of the mercs ?

As always things will probably depend on what them feckers up in Dublin think. But with a fairly solid Lab majority at local level in the city there is no reason why the new govt shouldn't be able to get some reforms over the line. Especially as its looking more and more likely the FF/VFI lobby won't be all that strong after March. In any case, this thread on boards is one to keep an eye on as things progress.

A few tracks that rocked the walls at wrong o'clock.
Big year for Dem Hunger with plates on leaving and vlek. Squint fucker making complete sense in the wee hours. Nochexxx's 'Timepiece' on Ramp was another favourite for the the heads. Moodyman 'ol dirty vinyl doing the business all year along with 'fatherless'. Also see Rekordah's Astro Dynamics. one of this years best comps.

Record of the year

Hard to say where you would have been advised to go if, this time last year you had told me a Japanese rnb record would be the one. But this LP really became the stand out as the months rolled on. Wall to wall movers, Grooveman Spot's second LP got battered here and easily sails into the top spot.
Can not recommend this enough.

Well then, I stop blogging for a few weeks and finally get some readers.
On Monday evening I had a visit from Government buildings of all places. No digouts around here Im afraid so at first I thought maybe someone had come across these parts via me ripping the piss out of @FFparty on twitter or something but it appears that "The cráic pipe blog" was actually googled and some poor sod spent 28 seconds reading before clicking over to Slackk's bandcamp page.

Now I know what your all thinking, don't the mandarins at Leinster house have better things to be getting on with then browsing some backwater blog that deals mainly in Aquacrunk and Buckfast ? Should they not be spending every hour of the day devising new ways of shafting the future taxpayer ? Has the cabinet finally run out things to waste money on and are they now reduced to spending those hard earned unvouched expenses on eski-house flac ?

Labour of course were first out of the traps with finance spokeswomen Joan Burton commenting that the Government have " some nerve " and if they insist on placing even more debt on every man, woman and child in this country could they not at least pay for fucking vinyl. Fine Geal, Im sure had something to say on the matter but no one really gives a shite what they think do they...

Speaking from inside a kitchen cupboard former Taoiseach and all round nice guy Bertie Ahern vehemently denied that he had even listened to any dubstep since 2006, Mary Harney said it was a matter for the HSE while the Tánaiste Mary Coughlan said there are many sites borwsed from Government offices that don't make sense.....many.

I suppose I should consider myself lucky.
